12 days of christmas

Image
Merry Christmas and all that, During a conversation with a colleague about my Project Management: The Sketches book (available on Amazon) he mentioned that he had a 12 days of Christmas song that had been pulled together for a previous project, it got me think I will include that in The Sketches. Just before I did I thought I would check that no one else had done, a quick google and low and behold a raft of  project management versions of the 12 days of Christmas, each made me chuckle so I thought I would share them with you, From Elizabeth Harrin at the Girls Guide to PM: https://www.girlsguidetopm.com/12-days-of-a-project-managers-christmas/ An Agile take form Terry Bunio on the PM Hut: https://pmhut.com/12-days-of-an-agile-christmas From  Andrew Budkiewiczat The Project managers Guide to the Universe: http://www.pmgu.co.uk/the-12-days-of-christmas-pm-remix/ Finally, my favourite ever version of the 12 days of Christmas from the incredibly funny Jasper Carrot (warnin

WARNING : NOT A BLACK FRIDAY DEAL!!!!

Image
As the Black Friday weekend draws to a close I realise I should have done this last week.  I have no black Friday deal to offer, just the same one as before When I Were Project Manager is still free and when I finally finish the Sketches you can sign up for early access. So why bother posting all?  As part of a desire create some additional funds for the little venture I signed up to the Amazon affiliate program, but have not maximised the potential, basically I refer people to Amazon and if they buy I get a little bit of cash. I have placed a handy search page on this site now that can be easily accessed from the menu button above. I would be very grateful if you used it for any of the final Black Friday buys you may make today or any leading up to Christmas. You may be wand to save it as you go to Amazon search page and provided continued support. As I said perhaps I should have done this on Thursday, but my time machine is not functioning well. Belated Happy Thanksgivin

Project Managers - What do you do all day?

Image
How often do you get a question like that from a friend or a family member, "What is it you do again?" or " What do you do when you go to work daddy?".  If you say "I am a project manager" these days it will fill their heads with visions of The Apprentice TV Show candidates shouting "I am the PM do as I say!", or a man in a hard hat talking to Kevin McCloud on Grand Designs about something is late. I do not have a solution to this dilemma and there are probably a hundred blog posts talks about how to talk to people about being a Project Manager. A quick google for " explaining what a project manager does" presents details of roles and responsibilities not what happens. What I have got is something, whilst dramatised is a little insight into a possible day of a project manager. Last night I watch the film called Locke starring Tom Hardy, now I don't want to give away the plot as you may want to watch it, and I do recommend watch

The Robots are Coming : Life Automation Project : Part 1

Image
Over the past 12 months or so I have been conducting various experiments with automation in work and at home and thought I would share with you how they have been going and some of the errors I have made. Automation and artificial intelligence are not new things, think about the simple video recorder or the robots in factories, CNC machines, whilst they only go so  far they are part of the story, and it even goes back further than that,  as can be seen in this documentary from many years ago. So my experience of automating my life includes the following tools IFTTT service (if this then that) Microsoft Outlook rules toodledo.com & app Amazon Echo My mobile phones Trello and its app Phase 1 - Email Automation in the Office My first goal was to try to manage the email traffic that I had in my inbox and help me prioritise which ones to look at, this is difficult to do unless you open the email and then decide, which burns up valuable time.  When l
